4.3

Family members, peers and other significant members in children’s lives contribute to there learning significantly. Below is an action plan, which I produced at the beginning of this topic.

Action Plan:

Current situation:
A session was planned was produced prior to the day, to focus on a young child who struggles with a language barrier. An activity based around using filo stich where the children are using coloured string/wool to create a pattern using a filo stich. This was chosen, as the intended outcome was to engage with the child and to communicate with the child at a higher level than what he does. As he does not communicate a significant amount due to the language barrier. However as the aim was to only work with the one child however the educator directed that more students needed to be involved in the task. Therefore by including more students into the group, it changed the initial plan, as it was therefore not a one on one focus. This caused the activity to fail, as all children where at different levels and some understood more than other or where more capable in doing the activity. Therefore it turned into a hard task and the intended outcome was not met.
Steps- what to consider:
The step that could have been taken to adapt the activity to suit a group of children rather than just the one was to change the context and to incorporate different resources and to change the outcome. A change could have been to allow the students to explore the outdoors to in order to find resources of their choice to bring inside to create a pattern, or to explore their creativity to create something using the resources.
Resources- what can use:
They would have access to the outdoors to collect elements from the environment of there choice to use in the activity. They will also have the option to use a piece of tracing paper and a led pencil to colours over there resources in order to create a pattern on a piece of paper.
Intended outcome:
Modifying the activity to this, allows the students to explore at their own risk and creativity, as it does not create a significant of limitations for them. It will also help to create communication within the children as it will be enjoyable and will be learning literacy and numeracy through this activity.

Critiquing the action plan I produced I can show recognition of my own potential prejudices and projections which I may need to overcome in relations to a child’s early learning of numeracy and literacy. As lesson plans never go to plan, as an amateur educator I was not prepared for this therefore I was unable to make any sudden changes. For my future reference I have realized that I as an educator need to take action at the time of the activity and to find a solution in order to enhance the numeracy and literacy learning opportunities for the young children. I feel this is a critical flaw which I need to approach significantly as there are family members, staff members who may be disappointed with my actions. As I have suggested in the plan that I would future the planned activity to suit a group rather than an individual by sending the children outside to collected there own resource and to begin creating there own piece of art. I however did not have control of the size of the group, which can happen within all scenarios as there may be children who want to join the group or there possibly could be children who do not want to participate. Adapting to the children can be a challenge however I believe it’s an area, which I need to address.
